On Prefiltering for Reduced–State Equalization of MIMO Channels

In this paper, we consider prefiltering for reduced–state equalization of frequency–selective multiple–input multiple–output (MIMO) channels. We introduce the minimum– and maximum–phase equivalent MIMO system transfer functions, respectively, and show their relation to zero–forcing decision–feedback equalization (ZF–DFE). Furthermore, energy concentration properties of the minimum– and maximum–phase equivalent are established which are generalizations of their well–known SISO counterparts and suggest to insert a MIMO prefilter in front of any trellis–based reduced–state equalization algorithm. Finally, a MIMO prefilter computation algorithm with lower complexity than state–of–the–art schemes is given.
