Biopsy technique for malignant melanoma.

A properly performed and informative biopsy is necessary for planning the definitive surgical treatment of melanoma. If possible, the diagnosis of melanoma should be established by a total excisional biopsy. On occasion the lesion may be so large, or so anatomically situated, that a biopsy in part is indicated. The techniques for both methods of biopsy are described in detail. The importance of the classification of melanoma as determined by biopsy is emphasized.
