Performance Analysis of Mobile IP Extended with Routing Agents

Mobile IP is the proposed standard for IP mobility support. We have extended Mobile IP with routing agents that handle frequent local movements of a mobile node directly and shield them from the home agent that can be far away. This paper analyzes the performance of Mobile IP and the extension with routing agents in terms of registration cost, handoo delay, and packet tunneling cost. The results show that routing agents reduce registration cost and handoo delay signiicantly with a slight increase of tunneling cost per data packet when a mobile node is not close to home. In particular, the handoo delay is independent of the distance of a mobile node from its home agent and can be controlled and bounded. The extension with routing agents is a exible scheme and includes Mobile IP as the special case when the routing agent coincides with the home agent.
