Jusqu'a la moitie des annees 80 la linguistique appliquee a surtout ete associee a la pedagogie, l'enseignement des langues et l'acquisition de la langue seconde. Elle s'est ensuite ouverte sur l'expertise linguistique en milieu judiciaire, le discours, les therapies du langage, ainsi que la langue des signes.
