Generator saturation modelling using three saturation models

Accurate modelling of generators plays an important role in power system studies. Inaccuracies in modelling can have a negative impact on the simulation results which can result in inapproapriate decision being taken by the power system planners. Saturation modeling in generator can affect the damping of electromechanical modes. Therefore, it is important that the different available modelling techniques be investigated and their effects on the damping of the electromechanical modes be quantified. In this paper, three different saturation modelling techniques (effective excitation, total, and incremental) are investigated. Simulation results show that the effect of saturation representation on the electromechanical modes (local modes) depends on the saturation modelling technique and the type of control configuration used for the excitation system.
