Case-based reasoning: diagnosis of faults in complex systems through reuse of experience

Case Based Reasoning (CBR) is a technique for solving problems based on experience. The technique's intuitive approach is finding increasing use in complex system diagnostics. This paper describes the principles of CBR, its benefits and some of the problems associated with the initial capture of experience data. One approach aimed at improving initial data capture using Model Based Reasoning (MBR) techniques is also introduced. A real-life implementation of CBR is discussed, describing how the technique has been applied in the diagnosis of faults on diesel-electric freight locomotives.
