Effect of cutouts or low-speed impact damage on the postbuckling behavior of composite plates loaded in shear

Results of an experimental and analytical study of the postbuckling behavior of graphite-epoxy and graphite-thermoplastic plates with cutouts are presented. Strain concentrations at the edge of the cutout, strain distributions around the cutout, and the effects of the cutout on failure strain are discussed. The failure characteristics of specimens with a cutout are described. Analytical results for a 16-ply specimen with a 2.54-cm-diameter-cutout are presented and compared with experimental results. The effect of low-speed impact damage on the postbuckling response and failure characteristics of graphite-epoxy specimens is also discussed.
