Literature Review and Prospective Issues of Vehicle Ingress and Egress

Objective: This study reviewed previous studies related to ingress and egress (I/E) of a motor vehicle and proposed prospective issues about that. Background: Vehicle I/E, entering and exiting a motor vehicle, are an important factor to directly affect ergonomic automotive design. Method: A lot of research with I/E-related keywords has been collected. They were divided into four types of subjects and were described in detail. Several major prospective issues for automotive ergonomics were proposed. Results: The detailed subjects are as follows; (1) Characteristics of I/E motion or posture, (2) Identification of the ease of I/E, (3) Statistical and mathematical modeling about I/E, and (4) Digital human modeling for I/E. Quantitative evaluation of the ease of I/E, accurate simulation of I/E motion or posture of digital human model, and development of application tools to ergonomically evaluate and design an automobile were considered to be future issues of automotive ergonomics. Conclusion: This study can be helpful to understand research trends related to vehicle I/E and identify meaningful future works about that.
