Rapid and effective defrosting at windshield/front door glass has been the goal of various investigations by automotive engineers. In recent years, a number of experimental investigations have been performed for the purpose of improving the performance of the defrosting system. Experimental investigations performed in cold room and field tests are so expensive to carry out and are restricted in the amount of data that can be collected. On the other hand, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) with advanced computing power can give rapid and inexpensive, as well as accurate solutions.
In this investigation, CFD was used to predict the defrosting pattern at windshield and front door glass. The general-purpose CFD package was used to perform the numerical simulation. Two types of defroster duct and simplified passenger compartment were applied in this simulation. First, steady solutions of two ducts were acquired. Using the distribution of velocity components at duct exit resulted from duct simulations, flow and defrosting simulations were performed for the simplified passenger compartment including safety glass and ice layer
One of two objectives of this investigation is to verify how the shape of defroster duct affects the flow fields of downstream and defrosting patterns. The other is to verify the defrosting performance of two systems
