Managing POD models by optimization methods

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is a model reduction technique for the simulation of physical processes governed by partial differential equations, e.g. fluid flows. It can also be used to develop reduced order control models. The updating of the reduced order model is a delicate question, because it plays an important role in computational cost. We adapt successful methods from nonlinear optimization to give guidelines when to update the POD model. Convergence results are given both theoretically and numerically.
