C31G,a NewAgentforOralUsewithPotent Antimicrobial and Antiadherence Properties

C31G,an equimolar mixture ofalkyl dimethyl glycine andalkyl dimethyl amineoxide, was evaluated for antimicrobial andantiadherence properties. Theefficacy ofC31G,its twocomponents, andseveral commercial mouthrinses was determined inassaysmeasuring inhibition ofglycolysis, inhibition ofbacterial adherence, andMICs.Inhibition ofglycolysis was determined byusing a saliva sediment model, withglycolytic activity expressed as thechangeinpH relative tothatofa control. Adherence studies were undertaken with Streptococcus sobrinus 6715tomeasure inhibition ofadherence tonichrome wires. MICswere determined against selected microorganisms bystandard methods. C31Gdemonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, withactivity against bothgram-positive andgram-negative organisms andCandida albicans, a yeast. C31Ginhibited bothglycolysis bysalivary bacteria andadherence ofStreptococcus strains towiremesh. C31Gwas more effective intheassaysconducted than anycommercial formulation tested andwas aseffective aschlorhexidine. A synergistic effect was demonstrated between theindividual components ofC31G,andno loss ofactivity was notedwhenitwas formulated into a mouthrinse vehicle. C31G, anequimolar mixture oftwosynthetic, amphoteric, surface-active compounds, hasbeenshowntodemonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Theactive agents arealkyl dimethyl glycine andalkyl dimethyl amineoxide, wherethealkyl chain length (C-12 toC-16) isrepresentative
