Dynamical Structures in Open Fluid Systems

In this chapter, an introduction into the analysis of structures in open fluid systems and their dynamics is given. In addition to presenting an overview over this area of research, we describe three particularly important approaches to a mathematical definition of the notion of a “structure”, and we discuss two examples of the application of these concepts from our own work. We also briefly review a number of important studies by other authors. Due to the vast amount of material that is available and constantly being added to in this field, this introduction necessarily has to be partial, and can only cover a small part of the activity that is centered around the study of flow structures.
