Development of Micro-EDM using Magnetic Levitation Actuator

This paper discusses new actuators and controllers for micro-EDM. The authors propose 2 types of magnetic levitation actuators for micro-EDM and have designed a feed-forward and sensor compensator controller for the system. The practicality of the system was verified through experimentation, in which tracking error of ±1μm was proven. The gap controller designed consists of a micro-EDM module and a conventional drive unit to complement the stroke of the micro-EDM module. It has been confirmed that the new actuators and controllers have saved machining time, improved machined surface and reduced electrode wear.
