A novel electronic ballast for high intensity discharge(HID)lamps was designed and implemented based on ATmega8 control.In view of the drawbacks of the starting procedure control of current products,the dual-constant-power control and the work pattern which the HID lamps are started up by DC and supplied by AC were employed to control the starting procedure and constant power of the HID lamps.The experiments using a 28 W HID lamps indicated that the starting procedure control is reliable and stable during long time operation.
