A Computational Investigation of Propulsion Integration

A numerical investigation has been performed on a generic transport aircraft configuration. The configuration used was the DLR, German Aerospace Research Centre, F6. This configuration is based on an Airbus A320 type transport aircraft. The main aim of this investigation is to study the aerodynamic integration of a nacelle/pylon on a modern aircraft and in particular, the effect the nacelle/pylon integration has on the vortex drag of the wing and the wave drag. The local lift at cruise was also studied. Initial studies have been completed using unstructured meshing techniques, with prismatic layers to resolve the boundary layers. This was chosen in favour of structured meshes due to the fact that remeshing was almost automatic. Initial results are in good agreement with published experimental and computational data.
