Effect of particle mechanical properties on silo flow and stresses from distinct element simulations

A set of Distinct Element (DEM) simulations of the filling and the discharge of a plane rectangular silo have been performed with variable values of particle mechanical parameters. Computed wall pressures at the end of filling are compared to analytical and Finite Element (FEM) results. The analysis of the influence of friction and stiffness of contacts shows that these parameters play a major role in the flow kinematics and in the stress field during filling and discharge processes.
