On connectivity properties of grayscale pictures

Abstract A grayscale digital picture is called “connected” if it has only one connected component of constant gray level that is maximal, i.e., not adjacent to any component of higher gray level. This note establishes some equivalent conditions for connectedness, and also defines a grayscale generalization of the genus in terms of sums of local property values.
