Chemical Constituents from the Roots of Morinda officinalis : Chemical Constituents from the Roots of Morinda officinalis

[ABSTRACT] AIM: To investigate the chemical constituents from the roots of Morinda officinalis. METHODS: The chemical constituents were isolated by column chromatography using silica gel and Sephadex LH-20, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. RESULTS: Seventeen compounds were identified as physcion (1), 1-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (2), 2-hydroxy-1-methoxyanthraquinone (3), rubiadin (4), rubiadin 1-methylether (5), 1,3-dihydroxy-2-methoxyanthraquinone (6), 3-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (7), digiferruginol (8), 1,2-dimethoxy-3-hydroxyanthraquinone (9), 1,3-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-anthraquinone (10), lucidin ω-ethyl ether (11), anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid (12), 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-coumarin (13), fumaric acid (14), stigmasterol (15), and daucosterol (16) and β-sitosterol (17). CONCLUSION: Anthraquinones 8-12 and compounds 14-16 were isolated from this species for the first time, and compounds 12 and 14 were reported from Morinda genus for the first time.
