Electric vehicles as means of energy storage

Abstract High penetration of renewable energies such as wind and solar, which have unpredictable natures in power grids, has made power system stability and security challenging. Therefore, to maintain the power system balance, there is a need for different kinds of storage systems such as pumped hydraulic storage. Also, as the EVs (electric vehicles) application is increasing in many cities around the world, the presence of EVs in the power distribution grids is inevitable in the near future. The main purpose of EVs is to meet the driving needs of the car owners. However, these vehicles can also be used as economical storage units for compensating the fluctuations of the integrated renewable energies in the grid. Due to the fast response time of the EVs batteries, they can be used for grid regulation and for maintaining the grid stability through offering different kinds of ancillary services (such as voltage and frequency control). Particularly in the near future in industrialized countries, where renewable energies deliver a significant share of the power production, the EVs batteries could play an essential role for catching the variabilities of renewable energy resources.
