Governing the Self Through the Construction of a Career Narrative.

A basis for career counselling from a narrative perspective is outlined. It develops the implications of a Foucauldian analytics of power and his later articulation of the notion of governmentality for conversations with young people about their career trajectory both in school and beyond. It also outlines the basis for a narrative career counselling practice that deconstructs the governing of the self through processes of surveillance and normalisation and then articulates a process of self-government through the construction of preferred identity narratives.
