A REVIEW OF BRITISH COLUMBIA'S TRAFFIC SIGNAL CLEARANCE INTERVAL PRACTICES

A review is presented of the current practice in the Canadian Province of British Columbia (BC) on the determination of vehicle clearance intervals at signalized intersections. The paper was prepared to provide input into the ITE Traffic Signal Timing Advisory Committee (TSTAC). One of TSTAC's aims is to develop a recommended practice for the determination of yellow and all-red vehicle clearance intervals at a traffic signal. Provincial procedures are presented and compared to the legal requirements as spelled out in the BC Motor Vehicle Act. A survey of 14 municipalities throughout BC on their clearance interval procedures is also provided.
