MODE LOCALIZATION DUE TO ASYMMETRIC STRUCTURAL CHANGES

Abstract The asymmetric effect on mode localization of a symmetric structure possessing nearly equal frequencies is analyzed. A reduction solution for nearly equal frequency perturbation is used to relate modes of a perturbed (asymmetric) structure and modes of original (symmetric) structure. A simple criterion for the occurrence of mode localization is derived for a symmetric structure with attached members of substructures. Numerical results of illustrative examples confirm that the criterion is valid and useful for selecting structural parameters in design work.
