Modelling the low-load performance of an advanced compression ignition engine running on European market gasoline

Future vehicles will be required to improve their efficiency while reducing CO2 and regulated emissions and while maintaining customer-acceptable levels of driving, safety, and noise performance. These requirements offer the potential to design future engines to operate on the most readily available and GHG-reducing fuels. Experimental and modelling steps have been taken to assess this potential using a Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI) concept, an advanced CI bench engine operating on a European market gasoline (95RON). Using a higher compression ratio, optimised valve timing, and flexible fuel injection, this GCI bench engine concept showed stable combustion at high to medium loads but was sensitive to EGR rates at lower loads. To assess possible improvements to the lower load performance, STAR-CD spray and KIVA combustion simulations were completed. The results provide important insights into variable valve timing strategies and the placement of combustion assistance to extend the engine operating range and performance on gasoline and other fuels.
