A Road Sign Framework Development for Rural Highway System

In spite of recent ITS applications for delivering dynamic traffic information, the importance of static transportation related information can not be underestimated in Korean roadway environment and it is still backed on by road signs. Among the roadway hierarchy, the provincial roads occupy a big share in their length and function and also play an important role in providing access to final destinations and in distributing traffic from the arterial roads such as expressways and national roads. The information provision upon them, however, leaves some to be desired. This paper, focusing on provincial roadway network, tries to develop a framework for providing road sign based information by pointing out major control cities and by elaborating a guidance structure encompassing various hierarchical roadways. Some reviews were made to be compatible with current MOCT guideline and authors identified nine different types which comprises the basic guidance structure. With this implemented, both efficiency and effectiveness of the guidance would be expected. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.
