This paper identifies the privacy implications of digital signatures, and some weaknesses in current approaches in law and policy in Australia. It introduces digital signatures and current standards and policies concerning them. The direct privacy implications of both private keys and public keys are considered, as are the consequential privacy implications. Legislative controls (Privacy Act 1988) and recommendations (PKAF Report) are then considered, and proposals made for new privacy rights that are needed.
