Generation of an optical 160 Gbit/s RZ-DBPSK-ASK signal is achieved using 40 Gbit/s equipment by combining polarisation multiplexing with simultaneous phase and amplitude modulation, each at 40 Gbit/s, on the same carrier. Successful transmission over a 50 km fibre span is demonstrated.
