Applying NLP to IR: Why and How

This paper examines some limitations of traditional information retrieval (IR) systems which set out the motivations for applying natural language processing (NLP) techniques to IR. The focus here is on applying NLP to morphological issues. Criticisms, suggestions, and new ideas are presented.
