EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS IN ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING (EDM)

Surface roughness properties of components machined by Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) are studied extensively, and experiments are performed on a wide spectrum of machining parameters. Various parameters indicating surface roughness of the machined surfaces (Ra , R z, and Rmax values) are plotted against some of the EDM machining parameters, namely; spark time, pause time, and discharge power. Electrolyte pure copper is used as the tool electrode and low carbon steel as the workpiece material. Eight different spark time, seven different pause time values, and three different power (current) values are used in the experiments. Experimental data are presented in graphical form, and fitting equations are derived for the plotted data. The curves are fitted as exponential function in the following form; R = A ts B
