DEVELOPEMENT AND APPLICATION OF LOCALIZED ARC FILAMENT PLASMA ACTUATORS FOR JET FLOW AND NOISE CONTROL

Active control of high Reynolds number and high-speed jets and consequently acoustic radiation from the jets has been hampered due to the lack of suitable actuators. Some of the attributes that would make an actuator suitable for such flows are: high amplitude; high bandwidth; small size for distribution around jet; phase-locking ability for jet azimuthal mode forcing; and sufficient ruggedness for the harsh environment of a jet exhaust system. We have been developing a class of actuators termed ‘localized arc filament plasma actuators,’ which seem to possess such characteristics. In this paper, we will present and discuss some results on the development and characterization of these actuators as well as some quite preliminary results on their applications in Mach 0.9 and ideally expanded Mach 1.3 jets with Reynolds number ~ 6x10 10. The results include limited flow images and far-field acoustic data.
