Heat Shock Protein Synthesis Induced by Methomyl in Maize (Zea mays L.) Seedlings1

Exposure of plumules of intact maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) to S-methyl-N-[(methylcarbamoyl)-oxy]thioacetimidate (metho-myl) represses synthesis of several polypeptides normally made under control conditions and induces synthesis of polypeptides similar to maize heat shock polypeptides (HSPs). Three of the methomyl-induced polypeptides (18 kilodaltons) are recognized by antibodies raised against 18 kilodalton maize heat shock polypeptides. Cells of almost all organisms tested respond to an upward temperature shift by the new and/or enhanced synthesis of a small number of highly conserved HSPs2 and a concomitant reduction in the synthesis of polypeptides normally made at control temperatures In animal species, a wide variety of environmental agents, as well as heat shock, induce HSP synthesis; the list includes amino acid analogs (1 and uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation In plant species, arsenite 12), ABA, and water-stress (maize; induce HSP In addition, a wide variety of agents cause the of mRNAs encoding HSPs in cells of soybean seedlings Methomyl an insecticide-nematicide used as a a variety of crop-plants including we
