Conceptual design of an electromagnetic tomography system

Abstract A new electromagnetic (EM) tomography system was developed for detailed surveying in mineral exploration. The EM tomography system consists of a surface transmitter (3-component loop sources) and a borehole receiver (vertical component) and uses frequencies in the 8-8,192 Hz range. As the first step in the system development, we conducted model studies using SLDM(3D). The phase data from the EM tomography is very sensitive to the model anomaly and the 3-component sources are useful especially for the multi-dimensional structure case. Also, these simulation results were used for the system design including the necessary sensitivity for the receiver, the transmitting moment, and so on.
