Pressure tuning of the fluorescence spectra due to deep traps in anthracene and naphthalene crystals

Compression of anthracene crystals at either room (20/sup 0/C) or liquid He temperatures drastically changes the nature and intensity of the fluorescence resulting from excitation of the crystals by the 458-nm line of an Ar-ion laser. Spectral effects were studied at pressures as low as 2 kbars and as high as 30 kbars. The noted broadening of the fluorescence is completely reversible to compression. (BLM)
