Modeling pretensions in bolted connections

Abstract Easy-to-apply methods are presented for modeling bolt pretensions in finite element analyses of bolted connections. The pretensions are modeled by using temperature changes in the bolts. The methods presented provide a direct means of calculating the magnitudes of the temperature changes necessary to produce the desired pretensions without the use of trial and error or iterative methods.
