Methyl farnesoate stimulates gonad development in Macrobrachium malcolmsonii (H. Milne Edwards) (Decapoda, Palaemonidae)

The influence of methyl farnesoate in the regulation of gonad development in the prawn, Macrobrachium malcolmsonii was investigated. Injection of methyl farnesoate into female and male prawns significantly increased mean oocyte diameter and testicular follicle diameter as well as mean ovarian indices and testicular indices, respectively. These results provide strong evidence that methyl farnesoate is involved in the control of reproduction in prawns. L'influence du methyl-farnesoate dans la regulation du developpement de la gonade chez la crevette Macrobrachium malcolmsonii a ete etudiee. L'injection de methyl-farnesoate chez les mâles et les femelles ont accru de facon significative, respectivement, le diametre moyen des ovocytes et le diametre des follicules testiculaires ainsi que les indices ovarien et testiculaire moyens. Ces resultats mettent en evidence le fait que le methyl-farnesoate intervient dans le controle de la reproduction chez ces crevettes.
