Memory, meaning, and syntax

Abstract : This paper explores the role of syntax in computational theories of natural language. We discuss the integrated processing hypothesis, which contends that meaning and world knowledge play a crucial part in language understanding even at the earliest points in the process. The hypothesis implies that syntactic knowledge plays no privileged role in language processing. Computer models of language analysis are discussed in relation to the overall theory. (Author)
