On the Education and Research in Kansei Design and Engineering

The importance of human-oriented design and engineering is well recognized nowadays. It is desired to take a totally new perspective of education and research focusing on human kansei (roughly, sensitivity; faculty of perception and cognition). In 1996 the Department of KANSEI Design and Engineering (Perceptual* Sciences and Design Engineering) was devised in Yamaguchi University. The new department consists of three divisions: Space Design, Human Interface, and Perception and Cognition Basics. In this report are outlined the procedures through which the department was devised with what educational concepts and research prospects.
