Travel demand management: thoughts on the new role for TDM as a management and operations strategy

The original purpose of travel demand management (TDM) was to provide alternatives to single occupancy commuter travel, with a goal to save energy, improve air quality and reduce rush hour congestion. This article focuses on broadening the dimensions of TDM by emphasizing its potential as an effective management and operations strategy. The current model for TDM presented is a contemporary, broader and more operations oriented model. Also presented are several overreaching issues that should be addressed in order to change the culture from traditional perceptions to contemporary thinking about TDM.
