Recycle and reuse mass exchange networks based on properties using a global optimization technique

Abstract This paper presents a rigorous model for the optimal design of mass exchange networks based on properties under a recycle and reuse scheme. The model features an in-plant treatment system and considers simultaneously process and environmental constraints for properties such as composition, toxicity, pH, chemical oxygen demand, density and viscosity. The model is a mixed integer non linear programming problem with bilinear terms on the property balances, and it is solved using a global optimization algorithm. The advantages of the proposed approach over sequential methodologies are shown with the solution of two cases of study.
