Lamb Wave Based Sensor Network for Identification of Damages in Plate Structures

Lamb wave based triangulation and indirect imaging using integrated sensor/actuator network is a promising technique for practical structural health monitoring system development. In this paper we consider the method of damage localization using base-line estimate of Lamb wave packet arrival time, a wavelet based damage index to analyze the severity of crack and corrosion type damage in plate structures and provide analytical results on the impedance calibration of bonded PZT sensor/actuators to be used in the network. The analytical results can further help in developing time-reversal technique for discriminating damages from background structural features such as boundaries and joints. The wavelet energy based damage index method gives quantitative and comparative estimates of the influence of Lamb wave mode conversion due to damage as compared to direct change in the energy of scattering in the primary Lamb wave mode.
