Integrated Design of Communities

In this chapter, the design of sustainable and low-energy communities is discussed. Specifically, hybrid power-generation technologies are integrated with energy efficiency systems to design and operate a set of buildings that are part of residential, commercial, or mixed communities. The hybrid technologies include renewables and fuel-based systems. These technologies can be integrated as part of microgrids to serve the energy needs of the communities. First, a general analysis procedure is outlined to design and assess the cost-effectiveness of hybrid systems serving the electricity and thermal needs of communities. Then, a basic analysis of renewable and fuel-based power generation systems is provided. Finally, case studies of designing low-carbon communities are presented.
