Broadband very-high-permittivity dielectric resonator antenna for WLAN application

DRA with a high relative permittivity have the advantage of low profile over conventional DR antennas. The low-profile characteristic makes the very-high-permittivity DR antennas very attractive for practical applications. However, largely owing to the higher permittivity, such DR antennas usually show an insufficient impedance bandwidth for satisfying the required operating bandwidth or are hard to design for CP performance in practical applications. To overcome the problem, we propose in this article two novel designs of the very-high-permittivity DR antennas, simply by loading two narrow conducting strips of suitable lengths for broadband operation or with a regular square cross-section for achieving CP radiation. Details of the proposed broadband or CP design are described, and experimental results of the constructed prototype suitable for WLAN application are presented and discussed.
