Leadership Challenges in Building a Hispanic Nursing Workforce

Maria comes to the emergency room with her extended family, complaining of abdominal pain. She is overweight, and her abdomen is large. She does not speak English. There is no one who speaks Spanish working in the hospital at this time. None of the nurses that are working in the emergency department are knowledgeable about addressing the needs of the Latino patient. The staff must rely on a language translation line to assist in communicating with the patient and family.
