Monte Carlo simulation of immediate and time-dependent deflections of reinforced concrete beams and slabs

This paper presents a deterministic model developed to calculate instantaneous and time-dependent deflections using a finite element approach. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to evaluate variability of deflections due to uncertainty of material properties and dimensions involved in the computation of deflections. Results of a parametric study are presented showing the effects of design variables on the variability of slab and beam deflections. Results confirm that variability of deflections can be high when the applied moment is close to the cracking moment, the reinforcement ratio is low, and the ratio of live load to dead load increases.
