Design of discrete-mode variable structure power system stabilizers

The design of a discrete-mode Variable Structure Power System Stabilizer (VSPSS) has been presented in this paper. The discrete-switching hyperplane is obtained using a pole-shifting technique. The optimum pole-shift factor and switching gains are obtained by applying an iterative Integral of Squared Error (ISE) algorithm. Dynamic performance of the discrete-mode VSPSS has been compared with a continuous-mode VSPSS, proposed earlier. Studies reveal that a sampling period up to 40 msec could be used, for the sample system investigated, without significantly deteriorating the system dynamic responses.
