Bus Rapid Transit signal priority strategy based on schedule

Transit signal priority is a multi-objective problem, including keeping transit schedule maintenance while at the same time minimizing the negative impacts on the non-prioritized vehicles. This paper develops a multi-objective transit signal priority model based on schedule to give priority to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system with segregated lane and dedicated signal light at an intersection. This model gives signal priority strategy to different BRT vehicles according to their schedule maintenance, including conditional priority for delayed BRT vehicles and holding for early BRT vehicles, in order to improve BRT schedule maintenance, headway maintenance and minimize the negative impacts on the non-prioritized vehicles by limiting the maximum delay of them. The VISSIM-based simulation results indicate that the proposed model can provide more reliable BRT service than that which is based on non-prioritized or non-differential signal priority strategy.
