This paper is designed to describe and evaluate the abstracts in terms of lexi-cal and tense use preferences published in national and international refereed academic journals in English. A corpus-based approach was undertaken to collect, analyze and interpret the results from these abstracts written by both native and non-native speakers of English. A total of 52 research abstracts was gathered and analyzed by Concordance, a computerized corpus analysis tool. The findings indicate that abstracts show similarities in stylistics and tense use among researchers both in national and international journals. However, there is a wide gap in lexical preferences between the two groups. This indicates that researchers in two different communities of practice have distinct preferences in lexical organizations in their abstracts. An instructional model is suggested to be a requirement for introducing genre analysis and genre teaching in academic
