This paper is designed to describe and evaluate the abstracts in terms of lexi-cal and tense use preferences published in national and international refereed academic journals in English. A corpus-based approach was undertaken to collect, analyze and interpret the results from these abstracts written by both native and non-native speakers of English. A total of 52 research abstracts was gathered and analyzed by Concordance, a computerized corpus analysis tool. The findings indicate that abstracts show similarities in stylistics and tense use among researchers both in national and international journals. However, there is a wide gap in lexical preferences between the two groups. This indicates that researchers in two different communities of practice have distinct preferences in lexical organizations in their abstracts.
