Modals and Modality in Legal Discourse: A Corpus-Based Sociosemiotic Interpretation

Inthisstudy,parallelcorporaoftheCivilandCommercialLawsandtheEnglishtranslationofthe People’sRepublicofChina(hereinafterP.R.C.)arebuilt.Modalverbsinthelegaltextsareexamined fromtheperspectiveofgenreanalysisandsemantics.Moreover,acomparativestudyondifferent variationsoflegalgenreisadopted.Thisstudyfurtherexploresthefindingsfromasociosemiotic perspectiveintermsofthedistinctionsonmodalverbsandmodalitybetweendifferentvariationsof legalgenre.Theauthorshavenoticedthedisparityofmodalverbsindifferentsituationsdependson distinctfunctionsofsituations.Althoughlinguisticandtextualanalysesaresignificantinexploring issuesoflegaltexts,itisnotenoughtolingerwithinthesedomains.
