Single Object Sensor: A Simplified Binaural Mobility Aid

A new sensory aid to blind mobility with a simple auditory display is described. It uses a binaural cue to object direction similar to that employed in the Kay Binaural Sensory Aid (Sonicguide), but range to the nearest object only is indicated by the apparent pitch of repetitive pulses, which varies inversely as the distance. Laboratory tests with individuals using the new single object sensor and the Sonicguide are compared. As a means for controlling locomotion, there is little difference in performance as measured by a specially designed, objective, mobility measuring system.
