Generally, topology optimization deals with force input systems which is very common in structural
analysis. And design sensitivity analysis(DSA) for those systems has been well established by many
mathematicians and engineers. In general, the force input model works well for the general structural systems.
Certain physical system, however, requires displacement input model, such as voltage input in electrostatic
systems. This paper present the DSA for displacement input systems using the adjoint variable method(AVM).
For design of the compliant mechanisms which are structural systems, the displacement input model has
shown better performance than the force input model. The authors believe that the derived DSA equations in
this research can be applied to the various physical systems, especially to the Microelectromechanical
Systems(MEMS).
