Successful application of directional perforation for sand management requires different geomechanical analysis and design tools to evaluate sand production probability, to quantify risk reduction and to establish practical operational criteria for safe and optimum production. It also requires new direction tools to ensure perforation accuracy. This paper reviews the developments of aeromechanics on in- situ stresses determination, critical bot tomhole pressure and sand production rate prediction, discusses new directional tools design and application in sand management. This paper puts forward an oriented perforating strategy for sand management. And oriented perforation can avoid the high cost; low productivity and operation complexity of gravel pack method and has broad potential in sand management.
